The unit of proof
What an entry is.
Deliberately small: one change, in plain words, with a date on it.
Dated
The month it landed, on the twelve-month spine. Dates are checkable; adjectives are not.
Specific
One change, named: an approval limit, a quote written by someone else, a meeting that ran without you. Nothing vague survives the file.
Kept as you go
Written while it happens, not reconstructed the week before a sale. A record, not a brochure.
Verified
Written down isn’t the same as true.
An entry only enters the Record once the capability behind it is verified: checked against what actually happens, not just documented. Installed and working are two different claims, and the Record only counts the second one.
While you still own it
Built before you need it.
The Record isn’t assembled when the business goes to market. It grows as the business becomes less dependent on you. That means you can use it while you’re still running the company, to see what’s been installed, what’s working, and what still relies on you. If you eventually sell, the same operating history becomes something a buyer can inspect.
At the sale table
Every owner says it runs without them. Buyers only pay for the ones who can prove it.
“It runs without me” is a claim every buyer has heard, so they price the risk of it being untrue. Owner dependence discounts what a business is worth by up to 50%. The Record turns “trust me” into “check for yourself”, and an investor reads the same file as a multiple.

One number, 0 to 100.
0 to 40 dependent, 41 to 70 partly dependent, 71 to 100 independent. It starts with the Independence Diagnostic.

The evidence beneath the number.
A high score is a summary; the Record is why a stranger should believe it. The Score opens the conversation. The Record ends the argument. It supports the valuation case and shortens the argument at exit.

Who sees the Record?
You do, first: the Record is private to you and your business. You choose when to put it in front of a buyer, an adviser, a lender or a fund, and what to share when you do.
Is the Record audited?
No. It is your own maintained evidence file, not an external audit. Its strength is that every entry is dated and specific enough for a stranger to check against reality.
What happens if we stop?
Every entry already made stays dated and stays yours. The file describes what the business already does without you, and that does not expire.
Is the Record of Independence a data room?
No. A data room stores documents for a transaction. The Record is built while the business operates. It shows how decisions, systems, people, relationships and knowledge have moved beyond the founder.
